Successful negotiators are assertive and look at everything – they know that everything is negotiable. This is negotiation consciousness.
Negotiation happens when we both want something the other person has but we haven’t figured out how to make it happen without feeling like we have lost (or where we actually have lost) something we care deeply about.
Ideally, everyone can walk away happy with a “win-win”. That doesn’t always happen. It may be the other party is intent on getting what they want without putting in anything. They get the contract and you pay the fees, put in the time and pick up the lunch tab.
How about finding that middle ground? There are practical tactics that can be combined into a negotiating strategy to suit every occasion and create that win-win.
